When Your Routine Gets Disrupted

I’ve been in Chicago for almost two weeks, and I’ve only worked out twice. Not because I suddenly stopped caring about fitness, but because I haven’t been mobile the way I normally am. And I hate it.

One thing this trip has made very clear is that I will not be returning to Chicago for an extended stay unless I have wheels. When fitness has become part of your lifestyle, losing access to your normal routine can feel frustrating. I’m used to being able to get up, go to the gym, move my body, and structure my day around the habits I’ve worked hard to build.

But this is also part of the journey.

Fitness is not about being perfect every single week. Life happens. Travel happens. Schedules change. Access changes. What matters is not allowing a temporary disruption to become a permanent excuse.

These last two weeks reminded me how much I actually value movement now. There was a time when missing the gym would not have bothered me at all. Now, I genuinely miss it. That alone shows growth.

The goal when I get back home is simple: get right back into my routine. No punishment. No trying to “make up” for missed workouts. Just discipline, consistency, and picking back up where I left off.

Sometimes progress is not measured by how perfect your routine is. Sometimes it is realizing that the lifestyle you once had to force yourself into has become the lifestyle you actually miss when you cannot do it.

Fitness Friday Reminder: A disrupted routine does not erase your progress. Get back to it as soon as you can and keep going.
